Next phase – Mathilde without a driver behind the wheel

European premiere in automated freight transport
With Switzerland, Europe is reaching a new milestone in automated freight transport: Since May 2026, Mathilde has been operating within the city of Bern without a driver behind the wheel. This marks the next development phase for the highly automated Level 4 delivery vehicle in real-world logistics operations.
“In other parts of the world, such as the United States or China, driverless driving has long been more visible. Europe, on the other hand, is deliberately taking a different approach: here, regulation, validation, and safety assurance come first — and only then comes scaling. This may create the impression that Europe is not yet as advanced. In reality, however, this approach lays the foundation for the safe and sustainable deployment of autonomous vehicles in public spaces,” says Lara Amini, co-founder of LOXO.
With this latest step, the scaling phase is now beginning. The basis for this current stage of development is the approval granted by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), which allows operation without a driver behind the wheel within a defined operational area and under strict conditions.
The current progress demonstrates that automated city logistics not only work technologically, but can also be integrated into real logistics processes.

Tech in the city
The Swiss parcel service ‘Planzer Parcel’ and the tech start-up LOXO are joining forces: as part of ‘Planzer – Dynamic Micro Hub with LOXO’, they are testing highly automated Level 4 driving (without a driver in specific cases) in Bern city centre. This project is adding a new sustainability dimension to city logistics, i.e. last-mile parcel distribution.

Survey on the perception of new technologies in Switzerland
The University of St.Gallen and the University of Bern are carrying out the survey in cooperation with Loxo AG.
